Solomon Allen

 

Solomon C Allen Born in Ohio on May 05, 1843 to the parents of Benjamin Allen and Clarissa Herssey both of New York. Solomon joined the 5th Indiana Calvary (90th Regiment) Co I on August 1, 1862 for a 3 year enlistment. He was discharged on June 26, 1865 in Indianapolis.

On Jan 1 1866 He joined in marriage Rachel K Hildreth in Valparaiso. in 1869 they had their first surviving Son Fred. 3 years later came along his sister, Rhoda. By 1880 they had moved to Crown Point, and by 1900 they were living in Hammond Indiana. On 1/19/1907, He passed away due to heart problems. By the time of his death, him and Rachel were living back in Hebron. For much of his life he was a Barber. In his early life he spent time farming, until it became too much for him.

 

John A Hicks

John A Hicks was born on September 6th 1840 in Brooklyn NY to parents John Salon Hicks and Sarah Van Norton. In 1854, John moved with his family to Porter County where his father bought land and quickly became a farmer. On August 11th 1862 both John A and William T ( his brother) entered the Civil War by enlisting in the 99th Indiana Infantry Company C. John A mustered out of the service on May 13th 1865.

He married Sarah C Stephens on December 28th 1869. This was Sarahs Second Marriage as her first husband died leaving a Son Harry Smith. John and Sarah's Marriage lasted some 31 years before they divorced for a number of years before re-marring on Jan 6, 1909. To their union, were born Charles and Bertha.

John Passed onto better pastures on Jan 19th 1916.

 

James Vanatter

James was born on June 17th 1841 in Valparaiso. His parents are not known at this time, but we do know that they were from Canada. James was married to Sarah C before the start of the war, but the exact day is as of yet unknown. He entered the Civil War on August 14th 1861 in the 9th Indiana Co H in Valparaiso he was with the 9th Indiana until April 15, 1864. He then transferred into the 1st Ohio LAT Co D and remains there until the close of the war.

We don't have much information on the life of James, but we do have his Diary he kept during the war. It can be seen at Porter County Museum. Below is a link to read the transcribing of that which was done by Camp Porter Brother Ron Gill.
